Germanwings chooses Media Carrier for digital press

Lufthansa subsidiary Germanwings is the first German airline company to offer access on booking to a digital press service – Germanwings Travel Media. It has commissioned Media Carrier as exclusive partner to handle the technical aspects of the digital press.

Germanwings customers who book their flights on the Internet site www.germanwings.com now have the exclusive possibility of downloading digital newspapers and magazines, storing them on mobile devices and reading them during their flight. Media Box, the digital mediatheque from Media Carrier, provides the technical platform and content for Germanwings Travel Media. Passengers can select from daily newspapers like FAZ, Handelsblatt orNZZ, and magazines covering various interests. The selection is being continuously enlarged, says Media Carrier.

When booking a flight on the Germanwings website, passengers receive a personal link with their booking confirmation. By clicking on the link they obtain rapid and uncomplicated access anywhere and at any time to Germanwings Travel Media. They have a certain number of free downloads depending on the booking class – BEST, SMART or BASIC – from a wide-ranging press portfolio. Apart from the free downloads, additional titles can be downloaded for a fee.

Media Carrier is handling the entire process – purchase of the media publications, posting online and invoicing. “The Germanwings Travel Media business model is interesting for publishers in a number of ways. First, it offers them the possibility of presenting their digital publications to a large target group directly on the passengers’ devices. Second, it earns revenue from regular purchases of digital issues without the need to pay for printing and logistics. We would be glad to provide publishing houses with further information,” says Philipp J. Jacke, managing director of Media Carrier GmbH.

“We are the first German airline to offer a paperless press service to passengers who book a flight on germanwings.com. For every booking, passengers receive access to print media, which they can download as e-paper on their mobiles. In an age of increasing digitisation, Germanwings Travel Media is a convenient and modern service. Since 1 March, passengers have also been able to use electronic devices in airplane mode throughout the entire flight, enabling them to read the downloaded publications at any time. We chose Media Box amongst other things on account of the simple and intuitive utilisation,” says Katrin Flöther, Director Ancillary Revenue & Product at Germanwings.

Media Box says it is also making successful inroads into other areas such as the hotel industry. “The growing number of users and downloads confirms the increasing demand for digital media,” says Jacke.
