NFRN welcomes News UK’s pro rata increase

The NFRN has welcomed a forthcoming price increase on the Sun on Sunday with a pro rata increase in terms, which will give news retailers an extra 2p for selling the News UK publication.

National President Martyn Brown said: “Less than four weeks ago at our Annual Conference I said it was not acceptable for publishers to take a little off the retailers every time they increased cover prices as nobody benefited. It didn’t help news retailers pay their staff, pay themselves or pay their mortgages. Neither did such a move help to stimulate the sales person to promote the titles to the consumer.

“I am therefore pleased that News UK has sat up, listened and, more importantly, taken action to generate extra income from the newspaper category. My year as NFRN National President has only just begun but I look forward to working with them further to find new ways to generate newspaper sales and consumer interest.”

From this Sunday (July 6) the cover price of the Sun on Sunday will rise to 80p in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, with retail margins maintained at 22 per cent, giving retailers an extra 2.2p per copy.

The newspaper publisher said this is part of “an unrelenting drive” to grow revenues and sales of print in retail.
