Referendum debate in The Scots Magazine

The August issue of The Scots Magazine will focus on the Scottish Referendum. The magazine features comment from First Minister Alex Salmond and MP Alistair Darling and goes on sale today.

The Scots Magazine Editor Robert Wight explains, “The media is saturated with facts and figures presented by both sides of the argument and so we wanted to offer The Scots Mag readers something more. First Minister Alex Salmond and MP Alistair Darling make their personal pleas ahead of their first planned debate in August and it makes for fascinating reading.”

In the feature entitled ‘September 18, 2014… Our Day of Destiny’, Alex Salmond argues, “With even the most ardent unionists now accepting that Scotland has the human and natural resources to be a successful independent country, the only debate now is about who is best to make decisions about Scotland’s future. Everyone – on both Yes and No sides – agrees we can more than afford to be independent.”

Whilst Better Together’s Alistair Darling suggests, “I believe profoundly that it is in Scotland’s best interests to remain as part of the United Kingdom with a strong Scottish Parliament at Holyrood in Edinburgh. No Thanks is not a negative when the proposition you are rejecting is one that would damage the country you love.”

Nuffield College Professors Iain McLean and Jim Gallagher will provide comment on what Scotland might look like economically and politically following a Yes or No vote. The magazine also features the first of a two-part look at the Roots of the Union entitled, ‘Two Kingdoms Become One’ written by author and historian Allan Burnett.

This month’s issue of The Scots Magazine will continue to offer readers the regular mix of culture, history, the great outdoors including photography.
