Athletics Weekly quick off the blocks with app

Athletics Weekly, the track and field magazine, published by Descartes Publishing claims to be the first magazine in the world to start selling subscriptions to full digital editions via the iPhone e-commerce store.

The app was developed by Exact Editions, the London based digital publishing company who work with magazine and book publishers to market and sell web subscriptions to their titles.

The Athletics Weekly app was accepted into the Apple store, says the publisher, after passing through Apple’s rigorous acceptance procedures. The app allows iPhone and iTouch users to buy 7-day and 30-day subscriptions to the weekly magazine. Subscribers benefit from being able to access the latest issue of the magazine and its archive which goes back to 2007. Subscribers buy and renew through their iTunes account by simply verifying their account details.

The process can be seen on a U-Tube video demonstration.

Matthew Fraser Moat, publisher of Athletics Weekly said, “We are thrilled to be the first publisher off the starting blocks selling subscriptions in this way. There is huge potential with the large and growing market of iTouch and iPhone users. We are already seeing promising sales.”

Daryl Rayner, Managing Director of Exact Editions commented, “It is great to see an agile publisher like Descartes embracing new technology. We are very excited to be introducing a new revenue stream for magazine publishers.”
