CIN raises £270,000 for more than 200 charities

Central Independent News and Media are celebrating after the group's newspapers helped raise £270,000 for hundreds of charities across the region.

According to Northcliffe Media, last month the Lichfield Mercury's Buy A Bed campaign hit its £20,000 target to help fit out two specialist beds at St Giles Hospice.

Now sister title the Sutton Coldfield Observer, which launched a parallel Buy A Bed appeal to pay for two more beds, has smashed its target after an individual donation of £40,000 sent its grand total to £54,000. The Observer will now fund six beds at the state-of-the-art hospice.

And last but certainly not least the Great Midlands Fun Run – the annual charity event launched by CIN in 2003 – revealed its grand total for 2010 last week, raising a whopping £200,450. The cash will benefit more than 200 charities across the country.

CIN group editor Gary Phelps said: "It's been an incredible year for CIN's fundraising efforts. The Great Midlands Fun Run has a great track record for pulling big figures – it's raised £1million since we launched it in 2003  - and we've been amazed by the response to our two Buy A Bed appeals.

"It shows that even in these troubled times our readers are willing to support causes that matter to them."

CIN will launch a third Buy A Bed appeal, in the Tamworth Herald, in 2011.
