The Computer Arts ‘Global Design’ issue, out now, features a special report courtesy of D&AD president Laura Jordan-Bambach who is exploring new players on the world stage – the BRICS nations, of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The cover of the May issue was finished by decorative print finisher Celloglas at their Leicester site. The cover was finished with an overall coating of Velvet varnish, applied on their Heidelberg twin coater, that works at 15,000 sheets an hour.
According to Celloglas, the Velvet varnish gives the cover a lovely soft feel and has been used on previous Computer Arts covers. Then a screen glow-in-the-dark varnish was applied in select areas of the design, making the cover literally light up in the dark.
Steve Middleton, Sales Director at Celloglas, commented: “We applied the glow in the dark varnish with a 165 screen mesh, allowing the fine detail of the cities to show, we also varnished ‘The Global Design Issue’ title making it really jump out in the dark.”
Nick Carson, Editor of Computer Arts, commented “We have had a fantastic response on twitter about this cover, and lots of views of the video we filmed with Steve about the making of the cover.”
Nick added: “The areas that glow on the cover represent the new emerging players in the design market, the BRICS nations, of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.”
Steve added: “Glow-in-the-dark varnish can be used for various types of printed media, with examples including; children’s book covers, posters for pop concerts, leaflets and DVD covers, but the applications are endless.”
