Daily Mirror Northern Ireland hosts first Heroes of Youth Awards

The Daily Mirror Northern Ireland hosted the inaugural Heroes of Youth Awards on Friday.

The Mirror writes: A glittering ceremony at The Mac in Belfast saw a host of well-known faces from the worlds of sport, music and TV walk the red carpet to celebrate Northern Ireland’s amazing young heroes.

Home-grown star and host Colin Murray was on hand to crown 12 incredible winners, in categories ranging from Young Carer of the Year to the Local Hero award.

One such winner was four year-old Orlaith Culshaw, who was given the Outstanding Bravery award.

It was every parent’s worst nightmare when mum Claire Culshaw looked down in horror to see her seven-month old baby daughter choking and struggling to breath.

But it was brave, big sister Orlaith, that kept a cool head and came to rescue to save her little sister’s life.

Judges’ opinion: “What Orlaith did in saving her little sister’s life is amazing.

“But considering that she was only four years old at the time it take her keeping a cool head, in such a frantic situation, to a whole new level.”

With such awe-inspiring heroes to celebrate, Hollywood A-lister Liam Neeson spoke of how proud he was of them in a surprise tribute video message which delighted winners.

“I play action heroes sometimes in these movies but there’s no acting involved in the incredible things you have achieved.

“Take a bow because you are true, real life heroes.

“You are all a brilliant example of what’s so great about home.”
