The daily paper published a special souvenir 32-page supplement which told the story of the newspaper and also of many of its advertisers. It also included an evocative re-print of the very first edition of the EADT from October 13, 1874 and the first editorial, written by founding editor, Sir Frederick Wilson.
EADT staff in Ipswich were treated to a slice of birthday cake, a bottle of locally-brewed Suffolk beer, and a commemorative mug, which will also be used as gifts for customers.
A highlight of the day was the naming of a train as “East Anglian Daily Times – Suffolk and Proud.”
The ceremony was performed at Ipswich station by David Wilson, great nephew of Sir Frederick, and also Paul Elmer, whose family have read the EADT for more than 100 years. The train operates on the main line between Norwich and Liverpool Street.
EADT editor Terry Hunt said: “It was a memorable day. We were particularly keen that our celebrations wouldn’t just be about our story, but would also recognise the fantastic support we have enjoyed over the years from our readers and advertisers.”
