Editorial changes at Mirror, Express and Star

Trinity Mirror has completed the acquisition of Northern & Shell’s publishing assets, having received the approval of shareholders earlier this week to proceed. A number of key editorial changes have also been announced.

Hugh Whittow has taken the decision to retire from his editorship of the Daily Express, and Daily Star Editor-in-Chief Dawn Neesom will be leaving the business to pursue a freelance writing and broadcasting career. However, says Trinity Mirror, “we are delighted that she will remain as a columnist and interviewer. We send both our very best wishes for the future and our thanks for the valuable contribution they have made during their editorships.”

As a consequence of the above, Trinity Mirror has made a number of immediate changes.

Gary Jones has been appointed seven day Editor-in-Chief of the Express. Gary has been Editor of the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People since 2016. Michael Booker remains in his role of Deputy Editor, Daily Express and Martin Townsend as Sunday Express Editor.

Gary Jones will be succeeded as Sunday Mirror and Sunday People Editor by Peter Willis, who moves across from the Daily Mirror, with Alison Phillips becoming Daily Mirror Editor.

Jon Clark has been appointed seven day Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Star. Jon has been Associate Editor at the Daily Mirror since 2013. Bill Izzard continues in his role as Deputy Editor, and Stuart James continues in his role as Daily Star Sunday Editor.

Caroline Waterston has been appointed Deputy Editor-in-Chief across the Express and Star titles. Caroline has been Deputy Editor of the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People since 2016.

To aid the smooth transition of the titles to Trinity Mirror, an interim management team of Mark Hollinshead, Neil Benson, Andrew Round and Paul Wilks has been installed. Mark is a Strategic Consultant with prior experience as Managing Director of both national and regional newspaper titles, Neil was Group Editorial Director of Trinity Mirror prior to becoming a consultant, Andrew was Finance Director at the Independent prior to becoming a consultant and Paul Wilks was until recently Group Financial Controller at Trinity Mirror.
