Focus releases special edition app

To coincide with the launch of Apple’s new iPad with its super high-resolution screen, Immediate Media Co’s Focus magazine has released a special edition of its iPad publication showcasing stunning images from the world of science.

The ‘Megapixel’ special, available within Focus’s popular app, is made up of ten of the best images featured in the award-winning science and technology title’s Megapixel section over the past five years. The edition, with its high quality images, will get the best out of the new iPad’s 2048x1536-pixel Retina display.

A one-off publication, the Megapixel special is free to download and allows users to zoom in to the pictures to reveal incredible detail, while a map function allows users to pinpoint exactly where in the world the photographs were taken. Images include shark skin magnified 70 times by a scanning electron microscope, a photo of a space shuttle’s flight deck and a stunning picture of the Northern Lights illuminating an eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010.

Graham Southorn, Editor of Focus, commented: “Megapixel is consistently named as one of the most popular sections of the magazine, so we thought the launch of the new iPad with its Retina display would be a great opportunity to showcase some of our best images from the past few years.”

Focus launched its monthly iPad edition in November 2010, bringing the print version to life with enhanced features and interactive elements including integrated video and audio, 360-degree photography and animated covers. In April 2011, the Focus app was judged to be one of the top two publication apps in the world by the media research service iMonitor, and in December of last year was named as one of Apple’s best apps of 2011, featuring in the iTunes Rewind list - Apple’s annual retrospective of the best and top-selling apps of the past 12 months.
