Gregg Hano takes the helm at Mag+

Mag+ has announced that Gregg Hano, the New York-based publishing chief, will take on the role of CEO from May 7th.

Hano (pictured) succeeds Mag+ co-founder, Staffan Ekholm, who will further Mag+’s global expansion from the company’s Stockholm headquarters.

Ekholm, who has been operating out of New York to initiate Mag+’s US growth, is delighted at managing to coax Hano across from Bonnier Corporation – where Hano led the digital charge with titles including Popular Science, Sound + Vision, American Photo and Popular Photography.

Under Hano’s stewardship Popular Science+ has won many awards including Best Digital Magazine and Best Tablet App, thanks to the Mag+ format and success in generating digital subscriptions.

“Gregg is the ideal CEO to accelerate our growth,” says Ekholm. “He has been a visionary and an evangelist for the digital publishing industry from its earliest days, and involved with the Mag+ team from the very beginning.”

Hano’s publishing career spans nearly three decades. At Bonnier Corporation, he served most recently as senior vice president of Corporate Sales and the Bonnier Technology Group. Previously, he was vice president and group publisher for the Bonnier Technology Group.

Hano was behind Popular Science+, the world’s first tablet magazine, published on Mag+. “Our goal with PopSci+ was to define the future of digital publishing as a viable and profitable business,” says Hano. “Mag+ was the springboard that made it possible.”

Hano, who will remain based in New York, goes on to say he’s looking forward to working with the Mag+ team, including the high-level support of Ekholm. “Staffan has done a brilliant job of introducing Mag+ into the US and growing the New York team – I’m joining Mag+ at a hugely exciting time,” he says.

Ekholm will usher further global growth for Mag+ through new digital and strategic partnerships. Almost 300 titles are now published on Mag+ in 20 countries.

“We’ve grown at an eye-watering pace,” Ekholm says. “We are experiencing increasingly rapid momentum in this business – with as many as 30 titles a day joining our platform. It’s really exhilarating.”
