Haymarket launches apprenticeship scheme

Haymarket Media Group has launched its new UK apprenticeship scheme that aims to tackle the current skills shortage and develop the next generation of media talent.

The scheme - part of Haymarket’s newly-launched Skills Academy - will combine the rigour of college education with the practical and technical skills required to forge a strong career in today’s media industry.

Haymarket will recruit seven full-time paid apprentices in 2014/2015, increasing to 20 by 2017. The apprenticeships reflect the changing nature of skills required in the media business, with an emphasis of digital areas such as digital marketing, SEO and UX design.

The one and two-year apprenticeships will be delivered in collaboration with training providers CreativeProcess, Lambeth College and Kaplan and see successful candidates spend an average of one day per week in off-the-job training, while also benefitting from the support of Haymarket’s Learning and Development team.

Celia MacMillan, HR Director, UK, Haymarket Media Group says: “There’s never been a more exciting time to work at Haymarket and this new scheme will help us to attract and nurture the brightest young talent.

With so much change in our industry, the apprentices will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience while developing the skills required to launch their careers in today’s media world.

As an employer, the apprenticeships will help us to develop our own digital-native talent with skill-sets aligned to our business needs. The scheme will also help us to stay current and further innovation, by providing us with insight from the next generation of Haymarket audiences and clients.”

The apprenticeships are open to ambitious people aged 18+ with a minimum of two A levels at grade C or above or an equivalent qualification.

About the Haymarket Skills Academy

Haymarket says: The Haymarket Skills Academy aims to tackle the current skills shortage and help develop the next generation of media talent. The academy includes work experience and skills development for young people in education and a new UK apprenticeship scheme.

Haymarket currently offers 150 places for work experience for young people in education from 15 years to graduate level. By the end of the 2014/15 academic year this will increase to 175 places. By the end of 2017/18 the group’s aim is to increase this to 240, an increase of 60% against today’s number.

Haymarket’s new apprenticeship scheme will include seven apprenticeships in 2014/15, increasing to 20 by 2017. The apprentices will benefit from Haymarket’s market-leading learning and development programme which, for the last five years, has seen the company spend more on training per employee than the CIPD average.
