I would like to thank …

Imagine Publishing’s Retro Gamer won the Best Magazine award at the recent Games Media Awards. Editor in chief Rick Porter explains why he thinks they won.

By Rick Porter

The reason we think Retro Gamer walked away with the award is because it isn’t like any other games magazine on the market. It’s a true labour of love and it’s great to know the industry appreciates this. Thanks to everyone who voted.

A key element that makes Retro Gamer such a respected magazine is the team. Putting Retro Gamer together each month is a joy, but a lot of work goes in and it wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of those who work on and influence it each month. As well as the expertise of Editor Darran Jones and the team, there’s also input and suggestions from Imagine Publishing MD Damian Butt and Creative Director Mark Kendrick. Essentially a wealth of passion and experience is poured into Retro Gamer each issue and this shows in the final product.

Retro Gamer prides itself on interesting, superior content with passion. The magazine is free of responsibilities to cover the latest and newest games, so we are able to concentrate on delivering in-depth features that cover every element of gaming history. Quality is paramount on Retro Gamer, and only the best content is selected. Even then, if it can be presented better with more in-depth interviews, then it gets pushed back until it’s perfect. The fact that there are no time sensitivity issues regarding our subject matter leaves no excuse for a poorly executed piece.

This focus on quality has aided us in securing support from many industry luminaries. Over the years, many of the industry’s biggest names have been keen to get involved with the title, including Trip Hawkins, David Braben, Hideo Kojima, David Crane, John Carmack. Even industry legend John Romero volunteered to guest edit the magazine in a landmark issue earlier in the year.

We firmly believe that our covers help separate us from our peers. With Retro Gamer, we have the freedom to cover a wealth of topics, and we have decades of gaming to take inspiration from. As well as remembering acclaimed and much-loved classics, Retro Gamer is perfectly placed to use innovative treatments to celebrate industry milestones. A recent example is when we worked with Nintendo on Mario’s 25th anniversary celebration, which resulted in a treatment that was an industry first. In every case, we use our unique creative flair to deliver a result that the readers, Imagine, and the publishers we work closely with day-to-day can be truly proud of.

Our plan on Retro Gamer is to continue doing what we do now. The magazine will continue to improve in terms of articles and creativity and we’ll work with our trusted freelancers to ensure we can deliver plenty of fresh and exciting new content. Above all, we’ll continue to improve and evolve so that we can shape the magazine into a publication that both the readers and the videogame industry can continue to enjoy. Retro Gamer and Imagine Publishing are going from strength to strength and you can expect much more from the magazine, and some exciting new developments, over the coming year.
