Incisive launch British Journal of Photography iPad app

Incisive Media has announced the launch of its first app for the Apple iPad. British Journal of Photography, the world longest-running photography magazine, is now available as a bespoke app, created in a visually stunning quarterly format.

Using the best cutting-edge interactivity available on the iPad, it truly brings the magazine to life, say the publishers.

British Journal of Photography is the perfect publication for the company's first venture into the app market as its acclaimed mix of stunning imagery, stylish design and thought-provoking articles provides the ideal platform to harness the iPad’s unique interactive environment.

More than just a page turner, the British Journal of Photography App is designed to enhance the prestigious content from the magazine and offers a tailor-made experience for the digital environment. Provocative, visually arresting and elegant, it showcases highlights of the print edition together with added films, photographs and interactive features. Making full use of the iPad’s user-intuitive navigational tools and spectacular display, users can now engage with the photography in a new way and access the content wherever they are.

The new iPad edition of BJP allows every page to be emailed and shared online, whether readers have an iPad or not. It also boasts video content ready to play even without an internet connection, and brings the world’s longest running photography magazine truly into the digital age.

The British Journal of Photography App is the culmination of six months' extensive research and development work by Simon Bainbridge, art editor Mick Moore and group publishing director Marc Hartog who states: “this is the first tablet edition Incisive Media has produced and represents a significant resource investment and commitment to the evolving technology.

We have selected the Mag+ platform as our publishing platform of choice and have in the first BJP app created what we believe will set a new benchmark for a content rich and interactive experience on the iPad.”

Incisive Media’s Tablet Development Manager Tom Royal says: “Mag+ has allowed us to replicate the unique identity and content of the British Journal of Photography, in a format that really works on iPad. This is not just a digital page-turner, but a custom-designed interactive magazine that takes full advantage of the tablet.”

Royal adds that translating a print title to a tablet such as iPad can feel like a choice between fast systems that create only limited results, or more interactive ones that are laborious to use. But, he says, “Mag+ gives us the best of both worlds: a quick transition from InDesign to iPad, with a layout designed for the tablet and the room to add any custom interactive elements we can dream up.

“It’s also easy to use – new designers are able to create pages and test them on iPad after just an hour or two of training.”

Royal will also be keeping a keen eye on the developing Android market. He says, “One of the reasons we chose Mag+ is that it can support both.”

The first iPad issue of BJP includes a focus on photographers who have moved from still images to shooting motion pictures. It also offers hundreds of pages of photography, features, projects, intelligence, and technical reviews.

Incisive Media’s Group Managing Director, James Hanbury adds: “Surprisingly you might think, of all the Incisive titles, The British Journal of Photography - the Granddaddy of all Photography magazines with over 150 years of publishing heritage - has been the first to break the mould of its younger siblings and branch out in to the world of Tablet apps. Always a ground breaker, this magazine stands out as being ideally suited to showcasing stunning photography and film through the versatility of the latest application software. Incisive Media has invested considerable time and funds in building a robust and coherent mobile strategy for its brands, and the BJP App is at the forefront of demonstrating the value of that investment to our readers and customers alike.”

Moving Media+ CEO Staffan Ekholm says, “As a company, we are committed to putting creatives in the driving seat of the tablet publishing revolution. For us, the iPad edition of BJP is truly inspired. Incisive Media has used our software to create a wonderful new experience for readers.”
