Irish Independent launches iPad app

The Irish Independent is now available as a complete digital replica of the printed edition, optimized for the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Based on PressReadertechnology from NewspaperDirect, the Irish Independent ePaper app delivers a “rich and immersive reading experience” for Irish Independent ePaper subscribers, and is now available for immediate download from Apple's iTunes App Store.

The Irish Independent ePaper App contains all the sections of the ePaper, including Sports, Entertainment, Health, Lifestyle, Travel, and more. According to the publishers, “subscribers can hold a digital edition of their favourite publication in their hands and read it from cover to cover, just the way the title was printed - with no compromises in quality, fidelity or content.”

Some of the claimed features of the Irish Independent ePaper App are that readers can:

• Flip pages as if they are reading the printed publication

• Pan, zoom or rotate pages, articles and photos, and view them in stunning clarity

• Easily navigate publications, using thumbnails or tables of contents

• Open full articles in easy-to-read text view

• Sit back and listen to the publication, using on-demand audio

• Share articles by email

Plans are already underway to introduce enhanced navigation, social media features and personalization in future releases of the Irish Independent ePaper app.

Independent Newspapers (Ireland) has been a publishing partner of NewspaperDirect since 2004. Its titles are available through NewspaperDirect's Print-on-Demand network, on PressDisplay.com and as a privately branded digital edition based on NewspaperDirect's SmartEdition technology. This latest development represents an important evolution in the company's digital product strategy and is NewspaperDirect's first implementation of a white-label version of PressReader.

"For years, our publishing partners have turned to NewspaperDirect to develop highly integrated digital publishing strategies and platforms, so it's natural they look to us to develop their apps that support their mobile distribution strategy," said Alexander Kroogman, CEO of NewspaperDirect. "PressReader is just one of our many solutions that address the needs of news-hungry consumers and business users, and enables publishers to increase audited circulation and monetise content across multiple distribution channels."

Ian Byrne, managing director of Independent Digital adds that the new iPad app is an extension of Independent's multi-device publishing approach, which ensures both readers and advertisers receive a premium service. "We were the first major Irish newspaper to launch an ePaper edition online in 2006. The addition of our iPad and iPhone ePaper Apps reinforces the Independent's position at the pinnacle of innovation in the Irish marketplace."
