Melissa Denes to join the New Statesman

Melissa Denes, the editor of Guardian Weekend, is joining the New Statesman as Features Editor.

Melissa was editor of Guardian Weekend magazine for eight years and won the British Society of Magazine Editors’ Editors’ Editor of the Year award in 2019.

Melissa Denes said: “I am thrilled to be joining the New Statesman’s brilliant team of editors and writers in June. As Features Editor, I'm excited to build on what is already a beautifully written, smart and surprising magazine, bringing more narrative long form, deep reporting and new voices to its existing slate.”

Jason Cowley, Editor-in-chief of the New Statesman, said: “I am delighted Melissa is joining the team. She’s a hugely talented journalist and widely admired for her great work as editor of Guardian Weekend. As part of our commitment to publishing the finest writers on the defining subjects, she will oversee our long reads as we continue the expansion of the New Statesman across multiple platforms.”

Melissa Denes was editor of Guardian Weekend from 2013 until 2021, in which time the magazine won seven BSME and two Press Awards. She was also launch editor of the Guardian’s Feast magazine. Before that, Melissa was the Guardian’s arts editor. She will join the New Statesman in June.
