New speakers added to Society of Editors conference line-up

New speakers include BBC news chief James Harding, media lawyer Gavin Millar QC, digital media journalist and consultant, Matthias Spielkamp and Colette Paul, Chief Constable of Bedfordshire Police and Chair of ACPO.

At the Society of Editors Conference (Southampton, 9-11 November) Harding is expected to follow-on from the recent BBC Local Journalism conference in giving an update on discussions surrounding how the Corporation can work with local news providers to mutual benefit.

Gavin Millar QC is currently representing the The Bureau of Investigative Journalism’s application to the Strasbourg Court to challenge the government’s use of covert surveillance powers to access and analyse journalistic information and is expected to discuss threats to the media.

Matthias Spielkamp advises the media on cyber security including keeping their sources secret.

They will be joined by John Battle, Head of Compliance at ITN, Peter Barron, Google’s Director of Communications for the Middle East, Europe and Africa, Andy Moger, Executive Director of the News Media Coalition, Kim Fletcher, chairman of the National Council for the Training of Journalists and Clive Marshall, Chief Executive at the Press Association.

Those already confirmed include Caroline Kean, Litigation Partner at Wiggin LLP and Ian Murray, editor-in-chief of the Southern Daily Echo.

Based at the Grand Harbour Hotel the main conference sessions will run from Monday 10 November and throughout the morning of Tuesday 11 November. Sir Alan Moses, the chairman of the new Independent Press Standards Organisation will deliver the prestigious Society of Editors Lecture on the evening of Sunday 9 November.
