New-look Autocar for 2012

Autocar yesterday revealed its new-look magazine for 2012, featuring a bolder, fresher appearance that gives a greater prominence to scoops, stories, reviews and news from around the auto world, as well as more opinion from its well-known writers.

Autocar editor Jim Holder said: “The key aims of the redesign have been to add clarity, convey authority and maximise Autocar’s unique strengths. The new-look Autocar has been a fusion of team opinion and reader research and feedback.

“One of the key revisions is the inclusion of more space for news features and spreads, all illustrated with more pictures. The motor industry is full of fast-moving news and we wanted to expand our platform to deliver this to our readers.

“The Autocar road test is synonymous with setting the benchmark industry road test opinion and the new layout will include more details of in-car technology, a cleaner, uncluttered layout and a more direct verdict.”

Columnist Steve Cropley, who celebrates his 1000th column this week, has been allocated more space to detail his eventful and insightful motoring week.

A new but well-known columnist also arrives. Colin Goodwin is back, writing open letters to industry management on what he feels needs to change in the industry.

Autocar will also be printed on different paper stock, resulting in a slightly bulkier and more flickable-feeling magazine.

Summary of changes:-

• Increased space for news and pictures

• Longer column from Steve Cropley

• Industry-leading first test drives

• Refreshed feature designs

• New layout and content for the Autocar road test

• Increased space for used car section

The back-end of the magazine becomes ‘Deals’ and will combine new and used car buying information – deals and expert opinion alongside classic advertisements.

As well as the redesign, Autocar has also launched its mobile app, a page-turner app on the Apple newsstand. The app is free with each issue costing £2.99 to download.
