News International to stop bulks

News International has confirmed that it has served notice on partners and wholesalers with whom it has an agreement to supply “bulks”.

“Bulks” are copies of the newspaper which are sold for a nominal fee. These copies are typically distributed to clients of airlines and hotels.

The company says: “News International is committed to producing the best journalism and believes in charging a fair price for that journalism. We have taken this decision to reflect the value we believe our newspapers offer.”

The above affects copies of The Times and The Sunday Times and will be reflected by a subsequent reduction in the total net circulation, as announced each month by the Audit Bureau of Circulation [ABC]. Due to contract notice periods, this change will begin to take effect in the figures the ABC report from January 2010. The ABC has been made aware of this decision and will be altering our audit requirements as appropriate.
