Newsquest develop free newspaper strategy via Self Select

Newsquest have been developing and refining their free newspaper strategy over the last year in Greater London via pick-up distribution in major supermarkets provided by Bolton based Self Select Distribution (SSD).

After what was seen as a successful start, additional free newspapers are scheduled to start distribution via SSD this week including the Sutton, Epsom and Elmbridge Guardian series.

The main objective has been to further develop brand awareness for each of the titles within their respective marketplaces. Newsquest have been able to enhance the presence of each title by making it highly visible and readily accessible to readers and advertisers alike in high footfall environments including Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Sainsburys and Co-op stores in each local area.

Richard Thomson, Group Newspaper Sales Manager at Newsquest said: “We like what SSD represents as an alternative route to market and have seen a positive impact in our advertiser relations, attributed to this distribution method, allied to a significant decrease in the complaints from readers regarding where to get hold of a copy of their paper. Wastage has been managed to a minimum, whilst pick-up rates in most stores have been very high, making SSD's supermarket pick-up service a very efficient and cost effective element in our goal of providing excellent service for our readers and response to advertisers in their local marketplaces.”
