NFRN Gives Cautious Welcome to New Competition Watchdog

The NFRN has welcomed in principle the government’s decision to merge the Competition Commission and the competition functions of the Office of Fair Trading into a single Competition and Markets Authority.

Commenting on the move, National President Kieran McDonnell (pictured) said: “We see this as a positive as it will strengthen both the robustness of decisions and the competition regime - something that we at the NFRN have been calling for for some considerable time.”

However the NFRN is concerned that within the announcement there is no confirmation of the Competition Appeals Tribunal being retained.

Mr McDonnell continued: “For many small businesses that do not get the outcome they had hoped for there will be no further course of action, other than a hugely expensive Judicial Review. We are concerned that there is no mention of the Competition Appeals Tribunal within the government’s announcement and we will be seeking confirmation and reassurance that it is being retained.”
