NFRN welcomes Waitrose loyalty card move

The NFRN is celebrating after Waitrose doubled the amount that customers must spend in-store to receive a free newspaper.

From Saturday April 26, myWaitrose loyalty card holders will have to spend £10 to take advantage of the free newspaper promotion.

The move comes after NFRN Chief Executive Paul Baxter wrote to local trading standards explaining that the move was decimating sales in many independent retailers’ stores. Many NFRN members wrote to their own MPs to complain and an Early Day Motion expressed concern at the impact the promotion was having on small newsagents and convenience stores.

Mr Baxter said: “It’s a small victory but an important one as many members have seen their sales drop alarmingly since the promotion began. We are pleased that Waitrose has realised the error of its ways, recognising the political storm that has erupted and the damage its offer has been doing, and so has decided to double the amount that customers must now spend to £10.”
