Camelot has signed up as the main sponsor of the new Regional Press Awards organised by the Society of Editors and award winning radio presenter Nick Ferrari will host the awards ceremony.

The Regional Press Awards lunch will be held at the Park Plaza Riverbank that overlooks the Thames on London’s Albert Embankment at 12 for 12.45 on Wednesday May 11.

Camelot, operator of the National Lottery is a long time supporter of Society of Editors conferences and the national press awards.

Ferrari, a former newspaper journalist and executive is presenter of the Breakfast show at LBC 97.3.  He has presented regional awards previously but is donating his services to help ensure this year’s event can happen.

The awards are organised by the Society for Editors on a not for profit basis in association with the help of the Newspaper Society, HoldTheFrontPage, the Press Association and the Journalists’ Charity which will benefit from any surplus.

On the south bank of the river, the hotel has M16 as a near neighbour and is a stone’s throw from Lambeth Palace. The Park Plaza Riverside affords spectacular views of the Tate Britain, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the London Eye and is perfectly located close to major attractions and historic landmarks.

Attendance at the lunch will be at the special inclusive price of £70 plus Vat per person or £700 plus Vat per table to include refreshments at the Newspaper Society AGM, a pre lunch drinks reception and wine with lunch. Special rates for overnight stays may be available. To book your place please contact kate.mcmillan@societyofeditors.org.

Earlier this month it was announced that the awards attracted more than 750 entries. The first stage of judging is now underway and shortlists will be published in early April. Newspaper consultant and designer Peter Sands is chairing the judges.

Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors said: “We are delighted and grateful for the support of Camelot and Nick Ferrari. They share our determination to recognise the talent and effort that goes into regional and local newspapers.”

Newspaper Society members undertook to participate in and support the awards and to avoid taking part in any competing UK-wide events.

The lunchtime awards ceremony will coincide with the Newspaper Society AGM and Local Newspaper Week 2011 (9th-15th May).
