Over 3,000 Books Read in The Week Junior’s Summer of Reading Campaign

The Week Junior, Dennis’ children’s magazine for 8–14 year-olds, received over 1,000 entries into its Summer of Reading campaign, which equates to over 3,000 books being read by children in the UK in the summer months, say the publishers.

Anna Bassi: “We loved reading the three word reviews that the children sent to us.”

The initiative ran from July to September and challenged children to read three books, review them in three words, and give them a star rating out of three.

Of the 3,000 books read there were some clear favourites in terms of both authors and titles. David Walliams, JK Rowling and Robin Stevens were the top three most read authors respectively, while Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (JK Rowling), The Boy at the Back of the Class (Onjali Q. Rauf), and The World’s Worst Parents (David Walliams) were the most read books.

The three most used words by the budding reviewers that took part in the challenge were adventurous, exciting and funny. Three of the lucky entrants into the challenge each won a bundle of new books to read, worth over £200 each. These were won by Maddie from Winchester, Sabrina from London and Lydia from South Yorkshire.

Anna Bassi, Editor in Chief of The Week Junior said: “We are overwhelmed by how many children took part in the challenge. It was a difficult summer for children and parents alike and with our Summer of Reading initiative we hoped to provide a getaway, even if this meant escaping through the pages of a book rather than going on holiday. We loved reading the three word reviews that the children sent to us, the care they took in choosing them was clear and the variety was incredible.”

Book publishers and children’s authors alike got behind the challenge, with Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell, Konnie Huq, Ben Miller and Patience Agbabi all adding their clout via their social media channels.
