Playboy marks 60th anniversary with launch issue reprint

Playboy magazine is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a reprint of its 1953 launch issue, on sale 25 April, priced £5.99.

According to distributors COMAG: “Now one of the most recognised brands in the world, when Hugh Heffner launched Playboy in December 1953 he did not give it a cover date, not knowing if there would be a second issue!

Not only was there a second issue of the magazine, but Playboy quickly went on to become part of the U.S. pop culture landscape, successfully combining photos of glamorous women, with lifestyle features, social and political issues, short stories, humour and celebrity interviews.

Quickly becoming part of the U.S. pop culture landscape, combining photos of glamorous women, with lifestyle features, social and political issues, short stories, humour and celebrity interviews.

Themed around a single subject or style, every issue of Playboy Presents is a collector’s edition of photos and features about the topic taken from Playboy’s international archives.

With high quality photography and stunning subjects, themes previously featured in Playboy Presents, include ‘Girls of Italy’, ‘Playmates of Brazil’, ‘Bond Girls’ and ‘Girls of Hooters’.

As part of the 60th anniversary of Playboy, the title has created the ultimate collector’s edition – a reproduction of its inaugural issue from December 1953, right down to the staples that bind it!

With Marilyn Monroe on the cover and inside as the first ‘Sweetheart of the Month’, Playboy Presents ‘Launch Issue’ also has the articles, cartoons and adverts from the 1953 original, including a Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a feature on the modern office.

By definition, every issue of Playboy Presents is a collector’s edition, but this reprint of issue No.1 of Playboy is sure to appeal to a wider readership than most and likely to be a must-have for fans of the iconic title, Marilyn Monroe and anyone with an interest in the history of magazines.
