PPA partners with Attributor against piracy

The PPA has partnered with Attributor to help UK magazine publishers tackle internet piracy and protect online revenue opportunities.

Under the terms of the agreement, PPA members benefit from access to Attributor’s content monitoring and identification platform at an exclusive rate, providing publishers with increased visibility of how their copyright-protected content is being used across the web.

By identifying unauthorised content reuse, where websites are illegally making full issues of magazines available to download or are republishing articles for reading directly on the site, Attributor’s technology also provides PPA members with an opportunity to reclaim potential licensing and advertising income.

A recent Attributor study, Online Magazine Infringement, analysed 20 of the estimated 2,000 domains that host material in breach of magazine publishers’ copyright. It verified 3,996 instances where downloadable, full issues of 133 magazine titles were available on these sites.

Barry McIlheney (pictured), chief executive of the PPA, said: “With the ongoing development of multi-platform publishing, magazine brands face a very real threat from piracy on the internet. At the PPA we have a responsibility to help members tackle this issue and together with Attributor we can provide a way of identifying and protecting high-value content.”

PPA members will receive a discount on the full suite of Attributor products and services. This discount includes Attributor Guardian, which allows content owners real-time access to actionable intelligence about where and how their content is propagating across the internet.

Further to its collaboration with the PPA, Attributor has reached a similar agreement with The Magazine Publishers of America (MPA), which represents 225 domestic and 50 international publishing companies.

Jim Pitkow, Attributor CEO, said: “It’s vital that these publishers have control over their content to eliminate piracy and increase revenue opportunities. Our partnerships with PPA and MPA will allow more publishers access to these services.”

Attributor’s content monitoring technology is available in 18 languages and helps content owners protect their copyrighted content. The technology provides 24/7-piracy protection by monitoring more than 35bn web pages, including hosting sites, cyberlockers and link farms, continuously scanning for copies of original works. Once a potential infringing copy is found, the content is verified by Attributor’s professional services team before takedown notifications are sent.
