The Big Issue appoints Russell Blackman

The Big Issue has appointed Russell Blackman as Managing Director of Publishing and Business Development. Blackman takes up the position with immediate effect.

Previously Blackman was Publishing Director of the Fitness and Entertainment divisions at Dennis Publishing where he worked for fifteen years. He started in advertising sales at the company in 2001 before rising to Group Advertising Director of their consumer division and finally Publishing Director before moving to The Big Issue.

The Big Issue is a weekly magazine sold by people who are encountering homelessness or poverty. The philosophy behind the magazine is to offer “a hand up, not a hand out.” Vendors buy copies for £1.25 and sell for £2.50, effectively running their own micro-enterprises.

Since The Big Issue was launched in 1991 it has helped thousands of vulnerable people take control of their lives. It currently works with around 1500 individuals across the UK, offering them the opportunity to earn a legitimate income, says the company.

Russell Blackman said of his appointment: “I’m thrilled to be joining the organisation at such a significant time. As The Big Issue enters its 25th year and is on the cusp of selling its 200 millionth issue, the business is bucking sales trends. This reinforces and highlights the continued appetite the public have for the magazine and the ongoing desire they have to help our vendors help themselves.

“There is a wealth of opportunity to build on the success and achievements the organisation has already had.

“As we approach the 25th anniversary of The Big Issue, there is also a need to reinforce the mission - to tackle poverty - and to introduce inventive means to allow The Big Issue to find its way into more areas of Britain, both through selling the magazine and by being a positive influence in communities across the country.

“I feel privileged to be able to support and build on the life changing work the organisation does in tackling poverty and creating opportunity. The Big Issue is the UK’s most successful and trusted social business and I look forward to working with the team and support the vital work they do.”

Nigel Kershaw, Executive Chairman of The Big Issue Group said: “With Russell's track record in publishing and brand development, together with a magazine that delivers a great read as well as benefiting thousands of vendors it is a powerful and exciting combination.”
