The Economist brings Intelligent Life to the iPad

The Economist Group has announced the global launch of Intelligent Life, the quarterly lifestyle and culture magazine from The Economist, on iPad.

Available from the App Store, the full winter issue of Intelligent Life, sponsored by Credit Suisse, is free to download.

The launch of Intelligent Life on iPad marks the first time the magazine has been made available globally, as the print edition is currently distributed in UK, Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa. Intelligent Life launched as an iPad-only publication in North America in October 2010.

Highlights in the current issue of Intelligent Life include a mini biography of Ralph Fiennes, a comparison of Appleism vs. Googleism and an essay asking why we are turning verbs into nouns.

Once downloaded, the issue of Intelligent Life is stored on a user’s device, meaning that all articles can be read without the need for an internet connection. The app includes embedded audio and video offering readers the chance to listen to clips of reviewed music or watch film excerpts.

“Intelligent Life, which has been available on the iPad in North America for two months has won many plaudits including being named as one of the ten best publishers’ apps by iMonitor. We are now launching it globally on the iPad, and in many territories Intelligent Life will be available in digital format only,” said Des McSweeney, publisher of Intelligent Life. “The iPad is the only smart device where the lean-back immersive experience of reading Intelligent Life in print can currently be replicated and for that reason, we have decided to launch it as an app for the iPad only.”

“The iPad is a superb medium for long-form journalism,” said Tim de Lisle, editor of Intelligent Life. “It is both a library and a lightbox, so it plays to our strengths. The iPad edition is a real treat, fully adapted to the medium, no PDFs allowed.”

Further highlights in the winter issue of Intelligent Life on the iPad include:

• Photo essay: Documentary photographer Daniel Månsson captures the frozen moments of surfers on the coast of the Swedish island of Torö

• Language: Anthony Gardner works out why we’re turning plenty of nouns into verbs

• Style: In the Applied Fashion column, former Vogue writer Rebecca Willis discusses how to dress feet up, without falling down

• Culture: The BBC’s hit “Sherlock” is just one of 230 films or television series featuring the great man. Matthew Sweet picks the best

• Gaming: The Economist’s Tom Standage on the joy of Angry Birds

• Places: Henry Tricks, who moved to Tokyo last year, looks at Japan’s attitude to outsiders

The next issue of Intelligent Life will be available for download in spring 2011.
