The Queen Writes for Local Newspaper Week

The Queen has written a special message for local and regional newspapers for this year’s Local Newspaper Week (21-27 May).

As reported by the Newspaper Society: This year the annual Week, which hundreds of daily and weekly local papers take part in each year, will showcase how local papers help communities celebrate important national events the Diamond Jubilee and London 2012 Olympics.

With articles from other high profile contributors, The Queen’s article will be made available through the Week website for local papers to download and use during the Week, which coincides with the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards and NS AGM on 25 May.

The Week aims to tap into the mood of celebration in the run up to the two important national events and local papers are invited to take part by showcasing how they are helping communities take part in these.

Local papers could take part linking their Jubilee and Olympics build-up coverage to the Week, getting involved in organising street parties, and highlighting their role in making national events relevant to their communities.

Many papers celebrate the Week through initiatives such as reader surgeries, meet the team features, inviting guest editors to take the reins for the day, or publishing only good news stories for a week. It is also an opportunity to get local politicians, celebrities and business leaders involved.

Over the coming weeks, more content will be added to the Week website for local papers to download and use during the Week alongside their own Week-themed news stories, features and supplements.
