Sir Nicholas Coleridge: “All the skills I learnt on a school magazine have been so helpful – commissioning articles, writing a brief, sub-editing, design and layout, writing headlines. They gave me a real head start in life.”

The Shine School Media Awards (supported by the Worshipful Company of Stationers’) is a free national competition for secondary schools across the UK and the students who write, edit, design and fund-raise for their school newspaper, magazine, podcast or website. The annual culmination of each year’s competition is a gala ceremony held in central London with student workshops and guest speakers.

On 27 June this year the guest speaker, Sir Nicholas Coleridge (former president, Condé Nast International) had inspirational words for the winners: “If my school hadn’t had a magazine to work on, to get my eye in, I probably would have ended up doing a completely different job,” he told them. “All the skills I learnt on a school magazine have been so helpful – commissioning articles, writing a brief, sub-editing, design and layout, writing headlines. They gave me a real head start in life.”

This year the ceremony was held at the Royal Over-Seas League in Mayfair, where pupils, teachers, judges and guests assembled for a day of workshops, seminars, lunch and prizes.

Building on the success of its first decade, the competition, which celebrates school journalism in all its various forms, is going from strength to strength, evidenced by the 341 entries it attracted this year against 228 in 2021. A total of 57 schools were involved, 20 of which were new to the Awards. This year, two former winners joined the judging panels, which also included Kenya Hunt, editor-in-chief of Elle UK magazine, and former BBC presenter Peter Day who is a Liveryman of the Stationers’ Company.
