Time Inc and Bauer Media to launch Gavin Reeve-Daniels Scholarship

In a media first, two of the UK’s biggest magazine publishers, Time Inc. UK and Bauer Media UK, have united to launch a prestigious MA magazine journalism scholarship at Sheffield University in memory of extraordinary journalist Gavin Reeve-Daniels.

The winner of the inaugural scholarship is Daniella Scott, a student who successfully gained a place on Sheffield University’s Magazine Journalism MA. The scholarship will cover Daniella’s course fees; provide her with an iPad; two weeks’ work experience at Bauer Media UK, and two weeks’ work experience at Time Inc. UK; and expenses during both placements.

Daniella, 22, from Cambridge, moved the judging panel with her witty writing and skilful storytelling. She wrote a 750 word article inspired by the Ferris Buller quote “Life Moves Pretty Fast. If You Don’t Stop and Look around Once in a While, You Could Miss It”, focusing on her grandmother and learning the value of life.

Gavin Reeve-Daniels had an impressive career that spanned many years at both publishing companies, working at titles such as heat and Now, and made his mark on all who met him. Not only was he professionally outstanding, but his dedication to developing junior members of staff on some of the UK’s biggest magazine brands means many will say they owe their careers to his support and encouragement, say the two companies.

Gavin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013 and died in September 2014. Marcus Rich, CEO of Time Inc. UK and Paul Keenan, CEO of Bauer Media UK – both of whom worked with Gavin – set about putting together a one-of-a-kind initiative to remember a one-of-a-kind man. The award application was designed to find a student who exhibits the same qualities that Gavin possessed.

The judging panel included Gavin's wife Leesa Reeve-Daniels, heat editor-in-chief Lucie Cave, Now's acting deputy editor Caroline Millington, Time Inc. UK's Carole Capon and Dan Coleman and Yvonne Illsley, Department of Journalism Studies at Sheffield University.

Paul Keenan, CEO, Bauer Media UK, says: “Gavin inspired so many people at Bauer with his energy, creativity and passion for the craft of making magazines, it seems entirely right that we are able to maintain that through this scholarship with one of the UK’s leading journalism programmes. Gavin believed that life was for living, he saw the world in a way that no one else did his, he had a unique storytelling ability that transformed a page way beyond words and pictures, he found the fun in everything and most importantly he instilled that spirit in everyone who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him."

Marcus Rich, CEO, Time Inc. UK, adds: “I was fortunate enough to work with Gavin. He was a brilliant journalist and designer with an instinct for a great story. At one point when he was an editor I was his publisher and the care and attention he paid to every member of his team, making sure they laughed, and were happy, and did their best work was second to none. He inspired people at Time Inc. UK and we are glad we can honour him with this scholarship.”
