Gareth Roberts: “Covid, industry-wide paper shortages, petrol and energy price hikes, plus the Royal Mail strikes - it hasn’t been easy.”

Portsmouth based Bishops Printers continues to rebuild and grow its almost £20 million turnover commercial print and mailing business after what it says have been the most testing 3 years in the family-run firm’s 37-year history.

“Covid, industry-wide paper shortages, petrol and energy price hikes, plus the Royal Mail strikes - it hasn’t been easy”, reflects managing director, Gareth Roberts.

Against this backdrop, and with cost management crucial for any successful manufacturing business, this month the firm announced a £2.1 million capital investment.

Roberts explains, “I’m cautiously optimistic about the future. We’re expanding our workforce and by investing in a new Heidelberg XL75 eight colour press, as well as a laminator, we’re able to make long term savings on our energy consumption and repair costs, while improving production capacity and quality”.

Over the next few months the firm says Roberts will be evaluating the mix of work Bishops are winning to determine what to invest in next. “Whatever we do, we’re committed to growing and investing in the right equipment and people, so that we remain competitive, agile and responsive to marketing conditions.”
