The magazine was founded as Your Family Tree by Future Publishing in 2003. In 2014 it was sold to Immediate Media. It was then sold again, to Dennis, in 2015 after the competition watchdog the CMA stepped in, with Immediate already owning one of the other two monthly newsstand genealogy magazines.
Dennis ran the magazine under its increasingly used 'franchise model', outsourcing the content to an independent team. In the case of Your Family Tree (rebranded in 2016 to Your Family History), the four-strong editorial team was managed by Andrew Chapman, director of publishing services company Prepare to Publish Ltd, with historian Nell Darby as editor; Chapman and Darby had both been writing for the magazine since its early years.
The closure has been attributed to rising print costs and pressures at the newsstand; a diminishing genealogy market after a peak around a decade ago; and the increasing availability of family history resources online.
