Empire celebrates ‘British New Wave’

Bauer Media UK’s Empire magazine has published four different collector’s covers dedicated to The British New Wave in celebration of the current wave of “hot, fresh homegrown” actors and filmmakers.

Empire celebrates ‘British New Wave’
Terri White: “This awards season paid homage to a crop of extraordinary British filmmaking and acting talent.”

This new talent is, says Empire, currently dominating the word of film – in Hollywood and beyond.

Featured on the four bespoke covers are Oscar-winning director Emerald Fennell, Malcolm X actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, BAFTA-nominated Bukky Bakray and Emmy-winning actor Riz Ahmed. The four actors and directors were photographed in Los Angeles and London post awards-season by photographers Rosaline Shahnavaz and Shayan Asgharnia.

The special event issue, on sale on Thursday 10 June, includes a series of interviews and photoshoots with 26 talented British actors and filmmakers.

Also featured are: Billie Piper, Gemma Chan, Olly Alexander, Sope Dìrísù, Weruche Opia, Olivia Cooke, Henry Golding, Morfydd Clark, Paapa Essiedu, Rose Glass, Jessica Yu Li Henwick, Remi Weekes, Kate Herron, Wunmi Mosaku, Hayley Squires, Niamh Algar, Rob Savage, Prano Bailey-Bond, Francis Lee, Kosar Ali, Sheila Atim and Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

Empire Editor Terri White commented: “This awards season paid homage to a crop of extraordinary British filmmaking and acting talent represented in both the nominees and the winners. We wanted to celebrate those people: the British New Wave. Twenty-six bold, brilliant men and women from both in front of and behind the camera, who are not only part of our future but defining our present. Whose ambition is only matched by their verve and vision.”

The new issue hits newsstands on Thursday 10 June and is available to purchase online.

This month’s exclusive subscriber cover is designed by Mike Cathro, capturing the spirit, energy, and vibrancy of the British New Wave in film, says Bauer Media.
