Nick de Semlyen: “Despite big screens going dark for now, cinema will never die.”

The new issue of Empire boasts two exclusively designed covers that celebrate the power of cinema and all it has to offer. Empire turned to design team The Red Dress’ Oliver Bland and Olivia Chancellor, who created a joyous piece of art for the newsstand issue, and Bill McConkey designed an image with iconic movie characters stuffed inside a cinema for the subscriber’s edition. The July issue hits newsstands and digital platforms on Thursday 14 May 2020.

While audiences await the return of big screens, blockbusters and boxes of popcorn, this deluxe issue of Empire hails cinema’s glorious past and anticipates its vibrant future, say the publishers. Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst talk through their rule-breaking collaborations, Steve Martin and Martin Short reflect on a lifetime of comedy, and Barry Jenkins talks about how he’s pushed boundaries to create a new type of cinema. Plus history’s most successful director, James Cameron, shares insights on his game-changing high-points. There’s also an exclusive look at the spectacular sci-fi epic Dune, which awaits audiences at the end of the year and Clueless’ Alicia Silverstone revisits the ultimate teen movie.

Commenting on the celebration of cinema issue, Acting Editor of Empire Nick de Semlyen said: “The cinema-going experience is one of many things threatened by the global pandemic. But despite big screens going dark for now, cinema will never die. In this special issue, we celebrate its power to uplift us, inspire us and bring us all closer together, saluting the magic of the movies with the help of some of Hollywood’s biggest names.”

The Summer issue, priced £4.99, will be available for pre-order now via Great Magazines at www.greatmagazines.co.uk and will be available to purchase from newsstands and digital platforms (Empire app on iOS or Android, Apple News+ and Amazon Newsstand) on Thursday 14 May.
