Through careful control of his image, says GQ, David Beckham has grown from football icon to fashion god, influential philanthropist and businessman. An exhibition at London’s Phillips Galleries of some of the most iconic photographs taken of Beckham by artists including Damien Hirst, Marc Hom, Nadav Kander, Annie Leibovitz, Vincent Peters, Mario Sorrenti and Paul Wetherell will showcase how that image has evolved – and where it’s about to take him.
“David Beckham really has a golden aura about him these days, a star quality burnished by a dedication to self-improvement, a savvy series of brand endorsements and the not inconsiderable fact that the public as a whole appear to have taken him to their hearts… As for this special issue, when we saw the scale of the project at Phillips and the wealth of images being auctioned – including some iconic ones that had been shot for us at GQ – we couldn’t wait to get involved,” commented Dylan Jones, Editor of British GQ.
David Beckham: The Man, opens this month at London’s Phillips Galleries followed by a gala auction in aid of 7: The David Beckham Unicef Fund, which aims to change children’s lives around the world, and co-organiser Positive View Foundation, a charity that transforms the lives of young people from difficult backgrounds by involving them in photography.
With five special covers photographed by Nadav Kander, Inez and Vinoodh, Vincent Peters, and Marc Hom, the March issue of British GQ is on newsstands and available to download from Thursday 4th February.
