New licensing deals for Science Focus

BBC Magazines has announced that it has secured a raft of international licensing deals for its award-winning science and technology magazine, Focus. The title is published as Science Focus internationally.

The new deals for Focus are:

• Following a licensing deal with Sprea International, Science Focus will be available in Italy from 1 October. The magazine will have a cover price of €3.90, although the first issue will be sold at an introductory price of €1.90. The magazine will be edited by Stefano Spagnolo and will have an initial print run of 70,000. Science Focus is the second BBC title to be licensed to Sprea International, following the launch of an Italian edition of BBC History Magazine in March of this year.

• Science Focus Hungary launched on 2 September and Science Focus Romania launched on 15 June, following deals with the Media Sport Group, part of Intact Media Group, the largest media group in Romania. Both titles had print runs of 14,500, with the Hungarian magazine priced at 395 HUF (approximately £1.20) and the Romanian edition priced at 11.9 RON (approximately €2.70).

• Published under license by Vokrug Sveta, the first issue of a Russian edition of the title went on sale on 25 August. With a cover price of 100 rubles and a print run of 90,000, the launch was backed by an advertising campaign that ran on television, online and on digital screens in shopping malls.

• Under the editorship of Panagiotou Maria, the first issue of Science Focus Greece went on sale on 11 June. The title is published by Democratic Press.

Joanna Marshall, Acting Head of International Licensing at BBC Magazines, commented: “We are delighted to have secured so many new international licenses for Focus magazine this summer. We are confident that the title’s mix of the very best popular science and consumer technology will be well received in these new markets.”
