The Online Media Awards, now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from some of the world's leading websites including Al Jazeera, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, The Times, CNN, USA Today, Sky, Channel 4 / ITN, ITV, Sunday Times, BBC and Reuters. This year’s awards are sponsored by iomart Group and supported by Press Gazette, the Press Association, Society of Editors, NUJ and the British Journalism Review.
Entries were judged by a 27 strong international panel including Noel Young, Ray Snoddy, Bill Hagerty, Eamonn Byrne, Liz Vercoe, Carla Buzasi, Mark McSherry and Matthew Storin.
VICE News were top winners on the night picking up the Grand Prix – the top accolade selected from all of the evening’s winners and Online Editor of the Year for Alex Miller.
The Chairman’s Award, chosen by Noel Young of ReportBoston.com, went to Reuters. Noel said “deserving winners of this year’s Chairman’s Award for their work on climate change – an important issue”.
Al Jazeera and the BBC were awarded in multiple categories including Outstanding Digital Team of the Year and Best National/World News Site respectively. It wasn’t only big names that were recognised. BACP won the award for Best Health/Education News Site for TherapyToday.net.
