PPA’s Carbon Calculator wins award

The PPA Carbon Calculator won the Environmental Initiative Award at the recent Trade Association Forum’s awards ceremony.

PPA Carbon Calculator was described by judges as “demonstrating an outstanding environmental initiative that benefits their members' sector and the wider world.”

The PPA Carbon Calculator, which was launched at the FIPP World Magazine Congress earlier this year, is free to all PPA members and allows publishers to calculate the carbon footprint of a title and to understand the impact of each part of the magazine production process.

The PPA Magazine Carbon Calculator has been in development for more than two years with PPA’s Carbon Footprint Working Group, chaired by Colette Mahon (pictured), Commercial Production Manager for Redwood.

PPA’s environmental manager, Rose Benjamin said: “PPA is the first publishing trade association to allow its members to calculate the carbon footprint of individual titles and to understand the impact of each part of the production process. Once the carbon footprint has been quantified and understood, publishers can begin to make informed decisions about how to reduce this footprint in the future and engage with supply chain partners to achieve their future environmental aims. The PPA Carbon Calculator is another example of how a trade association can help members to work together for the good of the entire industry. We are now working on phase three to improve the print and paper data and functionality of the calculator.”

The tool is based upon analysis from Edge in collaboration with industry partners BPIF, The Paper Profile Secretariat, Menzies and Polestar.
