Previously published by Puzzler under the name Hanjie, this logical puzzle has been treated to comprehensive consumer research across the UK, with surveys and in‑person focus groups, added Puzzler Media. The most striking of the findings, Puzzler continued, revealed that while the puzzle has become an international favourite, it is overwhelmingly recognised by fans as nonogram, rather than hanjie or any other name. In response, Puzzler says it has embraced the globally familiar name and launched a dedicated monthly magazine to bring the puzzle to the widest possible audience.

Greg Warren, Puzzler’s resident logic expert and editor of Puzzler Nonogram, shares insight into the puzzle’s unique origins and the delights that await readers: “These puzzles were originally devised by Japanese creator Non Ishida, who became inspired after winning a competition to design a light display in the windows of a skyscraper. She realised that the same principles of pattern and illumination could be translated into grid-based logic puzzles – and the nonogram was born.
