For one issue only: The New Feminist

The New European is undergoing a total takeover for one issue, and becoming The New Feminist.

For one issue only: The New Feminist

The takeover edition, replacing The New European’s May 31 issue, is edited by leading feminist activist and campaigner Caroline Criado Perez OBE.

Caroline recently campaigned for the first statue of a woman, Millicent Fawcett, in Parliament Square, and previously successfully fought to have women represented on British banknotes.

For this special issue, Caroline has commissioned many of Britain’s leading female journalists, authors and thinkers to write across a wide range of topics from a feminist perspective. They include Helen Lewis, Helena Kennedy, Samira Ahmed, Konnie Huq, Afua Hirsch, Bonnie Greer, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Suzanne Moore and Claudia Rodin.

Caroline said: “Women are woefully underrepresented in the media, and not just as writers. Women make up 50% of the population, but according to the Global Media Monitoring Project’s latest figures, we make up only 24% of the persons heard, read about or seen in newspaper, television and radio news.

“This is a product of two biases: first, that women aren’t seen as relevant to the stories we have traditionally thought of as newsworthy, and second, that stories that affect women more than men are somehow niche.

“I’m so excited to have this opportunity to showcase not only the breadth and talent of female writers working in Britain today, but also to demonstrate that women are as impacted by, and involved in, mainstream stories as men are. You just have to remember that they exist.”

Matt Kelly, editor of The New European, said: “The New European embodies innovation in print and this is a great new experiment we are already very proud of.

“We’re resting most of our regular male journalists for the week, myself included, and I can’t wait to see what Caroline makes of it. One thing I already know, it will be exciting, challenging and dazzlingly well-written.”

The New Feminist will be published on Thursday, May 31 and remains on sale all week in more than 27,000 retailers throughout the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and major European capital cities.
