New Editor-in-Chief for BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine

Professor Evert Verhagen, a human movement scientist and epidemiologist, has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine.

Professor Verhagen will take up his post in January 2021, succeeding Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis who has been Editor-in-Chief since February 2019.

Evert Verhagen is currently Professor of Epidemiology of Sports, Exercise & Health at the Amsterdam University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is also the director of the Amsterdam Institute of Sport Science and the Amsterdam Collaboration on Health & Safety in Sports.

Professor Verhagen has been a Senior Associate Editor at the journal’s sister title, the British Journal of Sports Medicine, since 2012.

Professor Verhagen said “It is an honour to be entrusted with the future of the journal. This young journal holds tremendous clinical and scientific potential in the fast-growing field of sports and exercise medicine.”

The British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) co-owns the journal with BMJ. Commenting on the appointment, Dr Roger Hawkes, BASEM President, said: “BASEM welcomes the appointment of Evert Verhagen as the new editor of BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine. His innovative style and original ideas will build on the sound foundations laid by his predecessor, Manos Stamatakis. We look forward to facilitating the development of this important journal.”
