Cumberland News puts on photographic exhibition

The 200th anniversary of the weekly The Cumberland News is being marked by a major exhibition.

Nearly 200 photographs, as well as original copies of the newspaper recording some of the biggest events over the last 200 years including the death of Queen Victoria and the outbreak of the first world war, will form the centrepiece of the Pages from History exhibition at Tullie House Museum in Carlisle.

They will be displayed alongside objects from the museum’s collection showing how industry, fashion, culture people and places have changed since the newspaper’s foundation in 1815.

Included in it will be memories of Carlisle United’s solitary season in the top flight of English Football – in 1974-75 – Royal visits and Radio One’s Big Weekend at Carlisle Airport in 2011 as well images showing some of the most dramatic events to affect lives in the region from the devastating foot and mouth epidemic in 2001 to the floods that hit Carlisle in 2005.

The exhibition is one of a number of special events taking place throughout this year to mark The Cumberland News’ role at the heart of the community for the past 200 years. The paper is published by Cumbrian Newspapers Limited, part of the independently-owned CN Group.

The exhibition closes on 31 January 2016.
