FT launches app for Samsung Galaxy

The Financial Times has announced that it will be a launch content partner for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab with a new HTML5-based app preloaded on the home screens of the Android devices in the UK from launch on 1 November.

Claiming to be the first UK news media app available on the Galaxy Tab, the app has been optimised for the device’s format and features.

The app is available for free and is integrated into the FT.com access model whereby users will need to register after reading three articles a month and then can choose to pay to subscribe after reading 10. At launch, Samsung will sponsor completely free access to FT content through the app until the end of November following the free registration process.

“The FT.com app for the Samsung Galaxy Tab builds on the success of the award-winning Financial Times app for the Apple iPad launched in May, which has already gained over 400,000 downloads and has been well received by advertisers and users alike,” said Rob Grimshaw, Managing Director, FT.com.

Steve Pinches, Lead Product Manager, FT.com, added: “Using HTLM5 we have been able to build a dynamic FT.com web app that can be tweaked to operate across a range of platforms and devices, starting with Android. This is an important step in being able to offer FT readers a consistent experience, no matter where or from what device they access FT content from.”

Key features of the app include the ability to:

• download the daily FT automatically to your Galaxy Tab for offline reading on your morning and evening commute – no need for the user to do anything

• Access content across all major sections of FT.com

• View the FT’s video content, including the latest updates on markets and interviews with high profile CEOs each morning

• Analyse key metrics in a dedicated Markets Data section, including macromaps highlighting markets across the world, with the option to also view regional indices and company information sheets

• Check your personal investment portfolios, as stored on FT.com
