KM Group radio station rebrands

KM Group's radio service for young adults in Kent, has rebranded; from KMD to kmfmextra.

Young adults in Kent now have their own distinctive local radio station courtesy of kmfm, says KM Group.

Broadcasting on DAB across the county and online at www.kmfmextra.co.uk, kmfm extra was originally launched in 2004 as KMD and has now come of age. Reinvented to provide a refreshing alternative to the other stations in the kmfm family.

kmfm’s 7 analogue sisters provide a mixture of hits from the 1980s to the present day, but kmfm extra is all about “Fresh Hit Music First.” Only the most current hits make this station’s playlist.

The role of local radio is to inform and involve its audience and kmfm extra is no exception.

The participation of the target audience of 15 to 24 year olds will be integral to its success. The kmfm extra production team have been working closely with students to develop the station identity and content.

In addition to entertaining, the station aims to work closely with higher education providers to give students practical media experience. Students at Canterbury College were key participants in designing the logo and have been given the opportunity to develop material for broadcast. Their programming contributions are scheduled to begin this Easter.

Presenter Rob Wills, formally host of kmfm Drivetime, has been the driving force behind the new station and hosts the distinctive flagship breakfast show "the extra big one". He and co-host Nicola Fletcher have been visiting students across the county to create awareness of the new station and the opportunities it brings.

There are over 200,000 people between the ages of 15 and 24 in Kent and Medway and kmfm extra’s website is already receiving a weekly average of over 2,600 unique users and the brand already has over 520 fans on Facebook, says KM Group.

kmfm claims to be the county’s most established independent local broadcasting brand and has an average of 178,000 listeners each week. In Q4 2010, an average of 33,000 adults were listening to kmfm via DAB platforms.
