Scottish Sun launches new summer radio station

The Scottish Sun yesterday launched The Scottish Summer Sun Radio station today (Monday, June 19), which will run until 20 August.

According to the Scottish Sun, the station will bring non-stop feel-good summer music and keep Scotland informed with features, local events guides and useful information for holidaymakers, for instance on worldwide hotspots and travel money rates.

The Scottish Summer Sun Radio started broadcasting on DAB and online today (listen here) and will run until August 20, broadcasting on the Central Scotland, Aberdeen and Ayrshire DAB multiplexes.

Featuring well-known voices from the pages of The Scottish Sun – such as Tam Cowan and Lorraine Kelly – the station is the latest collaboration between the newspaper and Wireless Group. It follows a successful trial last year, when the two media outlets combined to create The Scottish Sun Xmas Radio over the festive period. It has the support of several prominent commercial partners, including Specsavers and the National Trust for Scotland.

The summer station will be cross promoted in The Scottish Sun, with readers given the chance to win cash prizes for guessing the summer track of the day.

Wireless Group is also launching three other stations for the duration of the summer: Signal Summertime, Pulse Summertime and The Wave Summertime.

Signal Summertime, Pulse Summertime and The Wave Summertime, broadcast in Staffordshire & Cheshire, Bradford, Kirklees & Calderdale and Swansea respectively will promise “non-stop music, presenter free output with great summer features and information for travellers and holidaymakers”.

The stations launch on July 7 and will run until September 3, broadcast on Wireless Group's DAB transmitters in the three areas. All the stations will also be available online at each radio station website, via tune-in radio and on each radio stations app as an option.

The Scottish Sun editor Alan Muir said: "Building on the success of The Scottish Sun's Xmas Radio, The Scottish Summer Sun Radio will shine across Scotland’s airwaves. With a mixture of summer anthems, chill out tunes and cash prizes to be won we will be on hand to brighten up our listeners' day.”

Richard Bogie, general manager of News Scotland, publishers of Scotland’s number one popular daily newspaper, The Scottish Sun, said: “Whatever the Scottish weather throws at us, British summertime is very special and our aim with these stations is to become the feel-good soundtrack to summer 2017. It’s a great opportunity for us to take some of the things people love most about The Scottish Sun to the airwaves. We’re massively excited about that and advertisers seem to share that sense of enthusiasm, which is really encouraging.”
