SoE Press Awards 2020 – shortlists announced

The Society of Editors yesterday announced the shortlists for its annual Press Awards, celebrating the best of national journalism.

SoE Press Awards 2020 – shortlists announced
Ian Murray: “This shortlist of those in the running for the awards proves once again that UK journalism is at the top of its game.”

The Society of Editors’ Press Awards for 2020 recognise reporters and correspondents, commentators, columnists, cartoonists, designers, podcasts, photographers, scoops, investigations and campaigns.

There are 49 categories including the Journalists’ Charity Award, the Cudlipp Award for excellence in popular journalism and the Georgina Henry Award for Innovation, in memory of the former deputy editor of The Guardian and founding member of Women in Journalism. A shortlist for the Georgina Henry Award will be announced at a later date.

The Society will be spotlighting the work of its nominees along with judges’ comments in the weeks up until the awards ceremony via the SoE News Bulletin.

Winners will be revealed at a celebratory virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 31 March, details of which will be announced shortly.

Sponsors for the awards include Camelot which has supported the Society since 2001, headline sponsor Facebook Journalism Project, Google News Initiative, Amazon, Cision, The Careers Office, Newsworks, DialAFlight, Springer Nature, Luther Pendragon, BT, Wiggin, the Cecil King Memorial Foundation, the British Journalism Review, and the Journalists’ Charity.

Chair of the Judges and Executive Director of the Society of Editors, Ian Murray, said: “We will surely always look back at 2020 in awe, not just for the fact it produced the greatest news story probably of our lifetimes, but the way in which the Press rose to the challenge in reporting it.

“Entries submitted for the 2020 Society of Editors' Press Awards underscore the depth of talent and sheer professionalism that underpins the UK national press. This shortlist of those in the running for the awards proves once again that UK journalism is at the top of its game.”

The Society organises the awards on behalf of the industry, with proceeds helping to fund the SoE’s campaigns for media freedom and the work of the Journalists’ Charity.
