Tamworth Herald wraps up Books for Kids campaign

The Tamworth Herald's successful Books For Kids Campaign has reached the last page – with more than 2,500 books being donated to schools across the town.

Herald readers donated books by the box-load and all have now been distributed and are helping primary school children to improve their reading and literacy skills.

The campaign was launched by the Herald in March, in conjunction with Oakhill Primary school.

And a grand total of 10 schools benefited from the books: Oakhill, Stoneydelph, Lakeside, Two Gates, Lark Hall, Wilnecote Junior, Flaxhill Junior, William MacGregor, Bird's Bush, and the latest Moorgate Primary School.

Herald editor Gary Phelps said: "We are humbled by the response from readers to the campaign.

"It has been hugely successful and it is all thanks to the generosity of people across the town.

"The campaign was based on a simple concept – asking people to dig out any unwanted, good quality children’s books which in turn would be handed over to primary school children across the town.

"We had a tremendous response and we are truly grateful to those who donated the books."

The aim of the campaign was to target schools which serve deprived areas of Tamworth, after the Herald learned that many children did not have many books at home.

Oakhill Primary headteacher Ian Melloy said: "There has been a wonderful response and we are very grateful to people in the town and to the Herald for running such a successful campaign.

"The children at Oakhill have already been given their books and are already starting to benefit from them.”

He added: "Enthusiasm for learning and reading has been noticed in classrooms and I am sure this will be measurable in our attainment levels.

"We will build on this enthusiasm in the future and have greater attainment levels for future generations to come.

"I would personally like to say a big 'thank-you' to everyone who got involved with the campaign."
