Young Stationer's Prize 2014 - the shortlist

The Stationer's Company has announced the shortlist for the Young Stationer's Prize 2014.

The judges have announced the shortlist of the 2014 Young Stationers' Prize, awarded for achievement and promise in journalism, publishing, and any other trade of the Stationers' Company, to a recipient who will normally be under 40.

Anna McKane, a former Reuters journalist and long-time journalism lecturer at the City University, said, on behalf of the judges, 'that the overall standard is excellent, and those who do not win should know that they were part of a very strong field.'

The winner will be announced at an awards dinner at Stationers' Hall tonight, with the editor of Hansard as after-dinner speaker. The Prize trophy will be presented by the Master of the Stationers and Newspaper Makers, and was donated by the Pewterers' Company.

Andrew Barker

Editor, ES Magazine

'Tremendously impressive rethink of the Standard magazine'

'The point made by one of Andrew’s referees about editors so rarely being lauded really struck me as true, and I am personally aware of his successes with ES Magazine due to clamouring for a copy every Friday evening! The fact that he puts out stellar content every week with no break from the deadline churn, and has really shaken it up with new columnists, a page re-design and the new Deluxe editions, means he should be celebrated.'

Nick Coveney

Editor (digital, audio, and consumer), Hodder Children's Books

'Forward thinking and a real innovator'

'Nick has helped to bring some of the best-loved classics of children’s literature to life digitally for the first time.'

'Deservedly one of The Bookseller’s Rising Stars 2014'

Katie Glass

Columnist, Sunday Times

'Clearly a rising star producing engaging copy and hugely adaptable.'

'Fabulous turn of phrase and unfailingly interesting choice of subject matter. Mature beyond her years.'

'From the impressive list of ‘difficult’ issues that she has covered, from bipolar in young people to transgender children, Katie Glass appears bold, fearless, brilliant. The Other Club was already on my radar, so I was pleased to see a nomination for its founder.'

Kerry Hudson

Author, Thirst and Tony Hogan Bought Me an Ice Cream Float Before He Stole My Ma

'Combination of personal achievement and making a real contribution to her wider industry.'

'I personally believe very strongly in the importance of her WoMentoring project – to increase accessibility to the arts and publishing as a profession - and am impressed with her commitment and conviction to get such an initiative off the ground.'

George Walkley

Head of Digital, Hachette UK

'is making a difference to his sector'

'George works tirelessly and enthusiastically, ensuring not only that their Hachette UK’s publishing list operates seamlessly in the digital era, but also looking out for new innovations and opportunities for their content and their authors.'

Honourable Mentions

Other members of the long list also came in for special note from the judges:

Rosamund Urwin, columnist, Evening Standard

'She communicates through her writing, regardless of subject – celebrity cynicism or City analysis – as if she were a close friend; she reassures the reader wither knowledge and research, reason, plain English and dry humour.'

'Good feel for the concerns of young women in London. I'd like to see her marry this more often with her business journalism.'

Lucy Fisher, Times, Observer, New Statesman

'Great writing style and a hugely impressive portfolio for this stage of her career.'

'The standout candidate for her sheer talent while still so young.'

Hugh Miles, author, Al Jazeera: How Arab TV News Challenged the World

'Expert analysis of complex subject matter'

'In my view, the best of the journalist entries'

Tom Ough, editor, The Oxford Student

'Certainly one to watch'

Nick Stylianou, producer, Sky News

'Does an incredible job with huge responsibility'

Aaron Archer, group technical director, Pureprint Group

'The availability of large format double sided colour printing is a huge step forward in printing in this country, allowing anyone to self-publish small numbers of books at a reasonable cost, where the choice before was only expensive litho printing. This chap is an important innovator in an industry which was suffering.'

'My favourite of the applications from the more service or behind-the-scenes applications'

Padraig Reidy, contributor, Guardian, Observer, Irish Times

'Intelligent writing'

Tara Isabella Burton, contributor, Spectator, Atlantic, Al Jazeera

'Terrific work in trouble spots'
