Alan Titchmarsh to host BBC Gardeners' World Magazine event

Alan Titchmarsh celebrates 50 years in gardening with event for Gardeners' World fans at Haddon Hall.

On Friday, 29th August, gardener Alan Titchmarsh is hosting an event with BBC Gardeners' Word Magazine at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire to celebrate his 50 years in gardening. The gardens at this Peak District medieval hall have been re-designed by Chelsea Gold-medal winning designer Arne Maynard.

Expertgardening advice will be on hand in the event, and brings together the gardening presenter with a keen gardening audience. From his earliest days growing up in Ilkley, Alan Titchmarsh has been a gardener to his fingertips, encouraging people to garden through television, writing and charity work. As he marks 50 years in horticulture in 2014, fans are being given the chance to meet him at Haddon Hall, hear stories from his life and career and enjoy access to the venue in the company of the magazine team.

Lady Edward Manners, owner of Haddon Hall says: "We are delighted that someone of the calibre of Alan Titchmarsh within the international gardening spectrum has chosen to come here to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire and enjoy our wonderful and historic gardens. We look forward to welcoming him, and guests, on the day."

According to Alan Titchmarsh: "This year is a rather special one for me as it is 50 years since I began gardening for a living. And, while my career might have diversified to some extent, I still regard myself as a man of the soil, a horticulturist, a gardener.

"As I see it, a garden lets us do our bit for the greater landscape. Fifty years of experience have not provided me with all the answers but I hope to encourage more people to take up the spade (or the trowel) by sharing the sheer pleasure I still get from growing. Horticulture matters, and as any visitor to Haddon Hall will experience, being among plants is the greatest privilege on earth."
